Rassmussen Plantation addition to part 4

She stumbled across a large, leatherbound book. Cinnamon ran her hand gently across it, then wrapped her fingers about it to open it to a random spot, and blew dust off the pages. It was a photograph album.
“God, what a beautiful woman.”  Cinnamon thought, looking down at the young lady smiling up at her from the old book.
The photographs eyes seemed to hold her, pull her in. Cinnamon could see that the paste holding the picture into the album was old, and cracking. Gently, she inserted her finger just between picture and the page, and carefully pried the picture up. It had to be her. Cinnamon flipped the picture over, but there was no inscription on the back. It had to be Alyce.
Cinnamon shook her head and stuffed the photo back into the album, and shut it with a thud. She grabbed up a nearby sheet and tore a strip from it, wrapping it around the album and tying it with a knot. She took the album the crook of her elbow down the hall and up the musty stairs toward the attic and the maid’s quarters. When she’d reached the attic, she looked around her for a moment, until she spotted a dusty, heavy-looking chest.  With a grunt, she opened the lid, and dumped the album into the darkness of the chest, then let the lid fall with a clank, and a swirl of dust.
“That’s the end of that. Get out of there, Alyce Rassmussen.” Cinnamon thought, turning back down the stairs to return to cleaning.
She scrubbed and washed, swept and mopped all day, until the sun just started to get low, casting it’s long, languid shadows, and she realized that she was hungry but there wasn’t anything to eat...

Rassmussen Plantation part 4

They fell to the floor with an enormous cloud of dust, which swirled around Cinnamon so strongly that she left the room, coughing. She went back into the main reception room, and picked up her few belongings. She looked up the dusty grand staircase and thought that perhaps the master bedroom would be up there. She’d make it her own. She found the room without too much effort, and laid her duffle bag on the floor, glad to see that most of the furniture in the room had been covered with old sheets.
She thought to move her clothes into the closet, but when she opened the old wardrobe, she found that it was still full. The old-fashioned clothes of a large man. Cinnamon took the sleeve of one jacket in her hand and examined it a moment.
Caspar Langford Rassmussen
Caspar’s clothes, still hanging in the closet, but the furniture all covered. How strange. Just how did Old Rassmussen die?

Chapter Six

Cinnamon wasted no time in getting the house back into order. She decided to first clean the spaces she would be living in the most; the Master Bedroom, the kitchen and the garden. The bedroom wasn’t so bad, since it had been covered in sheets, but all the sheets had to be washed, so had to take them downstairs into the kitchen, and set them in a tub. The pump still worked, although for a long time it ran almost as red as blood from the rust. Cinnamon gathered some wood from outside, and got to work, quickly setting a fire in the stove to boil some water. She’d need a lot of boiling water, she had a lot to clean. She’s found in the laundry room some soap, not very good but still just usable after however many years it had sat there. While she waited for the fire to burn and the water to boil, Cinnamon set about starting to sweep up the dust from the kitchen.
The kitchen wasn’t as bad as the main entryway was; it had no doors to the outside, and Cinnamon suspected that helped to keep the dust down. She shook five dustpans to the trash can, and then took a mop to the floor about three times, rinsing it after nearly every run, to get it clean. The floor was still in very good shape, but for the initial layer of dust. The house had lain as still as a tomb, it appeared, and had preserved itself better than a mummy.
Cinnamon opened the cabinets, and as she suspected, found silverware and china, serving platters and spoons, mixing bowls… the entire kitchen was perfectly stocked. Everything had to be washed, rinsed, and dried, but before they could be put away she had to clean the cupboard they had come from.
It was hard, tedious work. Suddenly Cinnamon sat back, wondering. Her personal possessions had all fit into a few bags this morning, but now she had a great deal more, and wondered if among her new possessions she had a gramophone. Rich folks often had those things. She momentarily abandoned the kitchen cleaning and set out looking for the rare treasure.
She looked first in the Library, but did not find one, and so continued on down the hall, checking room after room until she reached the end of the hall. She noticed one last door that she had neglected in her initial tour of the mansion, and so pushed the door open. The first thing she noticed was the gramophone sitting on a table near a lounging chair, and she joyfully hurried over to it. But as she picked it up, it suddenly occurred to her. She slowly turned about her, looking. The room was clean. It was a sitting room, a beautiful parlor. The furniture seemed new and up-to-date, and there wasn’t dust on anything.
Cinnamon shook her head. Perhaps it had been Mr. Andrews, or likely someone had made the old abandoned place their secret hideaway.  She hoped it wouldn’t mean trouble. In any case, she was taking the gramophone.
The rest of the afternoon passed much faster, much better. Music always made thing better. She sang along to ‘Bill Bailey, Won’t You Please Come Home’, ‘Toy Land’, ‘In the Sweet Bye & Bye’ and other favorite songs she found in the room until she had properly memorized each one.
Sometime during the late afternoon, while she was beating the dust out of the Master Bedroom, she stumbled across a large, leatherbound book.
She scrubbed and washed, swept and mopped all day, until the sun just started to get low, casting it’s long, languid shadows, and she realized that she was hungry but there wasn’t anything to eat. She had gone hungry before, but wasn’t eager to do it again. Being hungry made it harder to sleep. She wasn’t eager to be kept awake all night in this still-unfamiliar place. She remembered the tangled garden, and hopefully she picked up a nearby mixing bowl to go see what she could harvest.
The garden was badly tangled and wild, neglected for fifty years, but Cinnamon struggled through the vines and thorns, and managed to find some potatoes, yams, and radishes still growing in the verdant Louisiana soil. Since the sun was setting she hurried back inside and settled for a rushed dinner of thinly sliced raw yams and radishes, which wasn’t very good, but was food nonetheless. She called for Tybalt and lit a candle, heading for the stairs and up to the only bedroom she had yet cleaned; Old Rassmussen’s Master bedroom.
That same, familiar feeling of fear and paranoia crept at her until she could scarcely breathe, but still she fumbled with the buttons and ties of her clothes and slipped her nightgown over her head.
“Tybalt? Tybalt!” Cinnamon called for her cat, a little louder than she had meant to.
Tybalt didn’t seem to mind, looking up at her from around her ankles with his big, yellow eyes. Cinnamon scooped him up into her arms and climbed into bed. It still wasn’t completely dark, but dark enough for the shadows to fully dominate the house.
“Hateful shadows.” Thought Cinnamon, who blew out her candle and covered her head with the musty blankets.

Sleeping in the Jeep

SPARKS!!
I’d really just like to get the freak outta here. I’ve been tryin’ to blow outta Sparks for four days now. WTF guys!! Luckily my school was super nice about it and aren’t holding my missing the first day of class against me. But I am holding it against me yet!! Was going to leave on Saturday, but I got an email from my director, saying that she needed a printed copy of my HS Transcript before I started class. Well guess what, the School Board Building is not open on a Saturday. So I had to wait around until Monday. In the meantime I discovered that my front left tire had a slow leak, so I figured come Monday I’ll run Butch Cassidy (the Jeep) on over to Allen’s Tire and get him all patched up. While there, they show me how my brakes are literally almost gone. Oh great. Okay, well, fix those too. What’s that? OH, THE POWER JUST WENT OUT!!!!???? Well, I’ll just camp out until tomorrow. The good news is that I have two new tires and new brakes. That’s always good. Since I couldn’t blow on down to Vegas yesterday I went to Starbucks to wait for the day to end and take advantage of free wifi.
Nice. I was chillin’ in there for a good two hours when some person sat down next to me, and I briefly thought, “Oh great, WTF…” but when I looked up, WHO do you suppose it was, but my favorite person del mundo DOUG SCHMIERER!!! So we got to hang and chill there until they closed down and kicked us out. We really just bumped into each other by accident, and I think he was a little put off because I suspect he wanted to read the book he had with him, but I also think he got over that pretty quick because I’m sure he was as pleased to see me as I was to see him.
“What are you gonna do tonight?” he asked me as we walked out the door.
“I’m gonna sleep in my Jeep.” I replied, “I was gonna sleep in the church since I know it’ll be open for FHE, but the church is in a shady neighborhood, so I’m gonna find a safe neighborhood and sleep in the Jeep. I don’t want my family to know that I am still in town, because they will think I am an idiot.”
He gave me a look like he thought I was a little nuts, but shrugged it off. I think he is getting used to my little quirks.

Sleeping in the Jeep is a cold business. And my hair was pretty wild this morning. And last night was a Full Moon and I was sore afraid of werewolves. And a stupid dog was howling all night, scaring me.
So hopefully NOW I can get out of town. Great, I think one of my Dad’s workers just saw me. But I don’t think he recognized me. Luck out!

Rock Me Baby Like a Wagon Wheel

I'm sitting on my bed in my room in the Hen House for the last time. All my stuff is packed up and neatly stacked in Butch Cassidy, and we're all ready to head off to Cody to get Shanny Danny right after Lunch. It looks like January in here; right after you take down all the Christmas decorations. It was kinda depressing for Mary, my roomie who will be here another month, so I got some dried wildflowers and put them on the shelves and hung some old, neglected hats up on the nails. I think I'll vacuum the floor before I go, and I've been burning my hippie candles for two days now; I want to make sure I leave good vibes here. Wyoming has been fun, has been good, and has been an education for sure! I feel a lot stronger now- muscles, mind and emotions.

But I also feel exhausted- muscles, mind, and emotions! Hah! I guess that means it was a good workout. Wyoming- I'll always remember you!  I'll remember the dances in the Saloon, and Roy and Jackson jammin' for us, singin' 'Wagon Wheel', 'Galway Girl', 'Natalie', 'Misery' and Johhny Cash's 'Folsom Prison Blues'. I'll remember the haunted jukebox that played music whenever it felt like it, and dancing with Ethan, who was always my favorite to dance with. I'll remember running to the Mesa, and then stopping my by the Chapel to pray afterwards. I'll remember the horses, especially Gordo who was my 'Fatty' and I loved him. I'll remember sleeping under the stars, or in a teepee that night that Jace and 'Caveman' Lee were our wranglers on the first Teen Overnight when the tent was stolen. I'll remember more than I can ever type out here. WYOMING!
What a life.

Crazy Person Ranch

I love Paradise Ranch- let’s get that part out of the way.  But this blog isn’t going to be about the Wild West that comes to mind when I first start thinking about Wyoming and my adventures here. It’s about another part- the folklore side of things. Any ranch you will ever go to has a legend. Most times it’s a ghost story, but you also get the Skinwalkers, the rogue predator, or the Indian curse on the place.
Paradise is pretty original; here’s our colloquial- people go crazy here. It’s not just the ranch either; the whole area knows it. Nearby we have Crazy Woman Canyon,  rumor says it’s named after one of the first victims of the Bighorn’s curse.
Remember Creeper Steve? Or the Foreman who saw people watching him from the trees? Well, we officially have a new crazy to add to the list. Out of respect, we’ll leave names at the door and call this new crazy ‘Lucy’, after Hungry Lucy. Who most of you have no idea about. Hungry Lucy is a crazy, that’s all that’s important.
It came out of nowhere; she was normal, generally happy and nothing unusual happened that day. Somewhere in the still hours of the night, I was suddenly wide awake, and a woman’s voice was shouting from the living room.
“Snakes?! You put snakes in my bed?! Yeah, yeah, wake up! I hope you are sleeping!”
She shouted all night from that point until sunrise, and she even left the Hen House to go to the Bunkhouse to harass the cowboys, then to the Bosses House and banged on the door there, saying that people were throwing up on her.
I was pretty wary, because she was also was hallucinating a ‘redhead girl’ who she raved about for a bit.
This morning the Bosses took her away to get help, and things are back to normal.
Maybe the legend is true…

Your pretty, pretty face

"You are so beautiful. I could never hurt someone as beautiful as you."
Flattering, and very pleasing- those words. And coming from an old friend, or a very close friend, they would just melt my heart like butter.
But most often that phrase comes from a semi-stranger, someone I've just met, someone swaggering and bullying and loudmouthed, someone who wants to make a quick impression and sees me as a pretty, mealy-mouthed little fool who he'd like to lay.
I am such a contradiction. If it makes me so uncomfortable and suspicious, why do I dress up so carefully to inspire those comments? And why do I then drown in devastation if those comments don't come? Like a puppy who wags it's tail and jumps at your heels until you reach over to pet it, then turns into a deer that shies away and runs to the safe shadows of the woods.
Maybe women aren't really made to make sense. Just know what's coming next; don't try to make sense of it. Science doesn't apply here. I'm a woman, after all.

Meagan Quirk and the Extremely Awesome Boots

Today I had to run to Buffalo to mail off a birthday package to my momma.  It is a very good present, and she will like it, but I cannot tell you what it is, peradventure she happen to read this blog and discover it prematurely!!
Well, I will tell you that it is a half hour drive into Buffalo, and I do not like to drive for half an hour to just walk into a place and then  just drive back, mostly because that is extremely lame. So I took a little stroll around Buffalo Wyoming just for kicks. And I happened to stroll into one of the many antique stores that dot that place. I walked around, looking at all the knickknacks and doodads and they were pretty cool. And then I saw the boots. Not just any boots. These were extremely awesome boots!
Most stuff in antique stores does not fit me at all, on account of folks way back when were smaller folks and I’m a average-tall girl of the nowadays.  But I tried them on just to see, and what do you know they fit PERFECT!! Well, I knew it was a sign that God wanted me to have these boots. So I bought them and they were cheap.
They are kind of crazy boots, but I love them!! They remind me of Steven Tyler.
Why? Because Steven Tyler is rockin’ it. And I am rockin’ these boots. Steven Tyler is a pretty ugly dude, let’s be honest. But does that stop him from being one SEXY dude!!?? No it does not! Instead, he takes it and rocks it! How does dude do this!? I do not know, I just know that he does.  So in honor of Steven Tyler, and in honor of being true to yourself, I am rockin’ my 60’s sweetness hippie boots, and gonna go find myself a lover at Woodstock. Hey, wasn’t Steven Tyler at Woodstock?
